Bamboo vs Silicone Baby Plates: Which is Best for Weaning?

Bamboo vs Silicone Baby Plates: Which is Best for Weaning?

If you're getting ready to start weaning, you've probably already noticed there are a lot of choices to make. And somewhere between deciding on baby-led weaning versus purées, and Googling whether your baby actually needs a high chair or just a booster seat, you've found yourself wondering: bamboo plate or silicone plate?

It's a genuinely good question. Both materials are safe, both are popular with parents, and both are a massive step up from the plastic plates most of us grew up eating from. But they're not the same — and depending on your priorities, one might suit your family better than the other.

Here at For the Baby, we sell both. So this isn't a sales pitch for one over the other. It's an honest breakdown to help you decide.

What's the Difference?

Before we get into the comparison, it's worth quickly explaining what each material actually is.

Bamboo is a natural plant-based material. Our bamboo baby plates are made from compressed bamboo fibre — shaped, hardened, and finished without synthetic coatings, plastic, or melamine. The result is a firm, solid plate that looks and feels more like traditional crockery than a baby product.

Food-grade silicone is a synthetic rubber-like material made from silicon (a naturally occurring element), oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen. It's soft and flexible, completely non-toxic, and has been used safely in medical and food applications for decades. Our silicone baby plates are made from 100% food-grade silicone — BPA-free, phthalate-free, and free from any harmful plasticisers.

Neither is plastic. Both are safe for your baby. But they behave very differently in practice.

Bamboo Baby Plates: The Pros and Cons

What parents love about bamboo plates

Bamboo plates feel substantial and grown-up. There's something satisfying about a weaning plate that looks like a proper plate rather than a piece of nursery equipment. They sit firmly on the table or high chair tray, they don't move around, and they have a lovely natural warmth to them that parents tend to really like.

Our bamboo suction plates come in a range of shapes — bears, elephants, lions, clouds, paws — and many have divided sections built in, which is brilliant for separating foods during baby-led weaning. The sections are firm and defined, so a determined toddler can't push food over the dividers quite as easily as they can with some softer materials.

Bamboo is naturally antibacterial and mould-resistant, which is genuinely useful when you're dealing with warm food day in, day out. It's also one of the most sustainable materials on the planet — bamboo grows without pesticides or fertilisers and regenerates incredibly quickly.

Our bamboo plates are SGS-tested and independently certified safe for food contact. You can download the full safety certificate on our bamboo product information page.

The honest downsides of bamboo

Bamboo requires a bit more care than silicone. It's hand wash only — no dishwasher, no microwave, and no soaking. A monthly application of coconut or vegetable oil keeps it in great condition, but it is one extra step. Bamboo can also pick up staining from strongly pigmented foods like tomato sauce and beetroot. It's usually cosmetic rather than a safety issue, but it's worth knowing. (We have a full guide on keeping bamboo plates stain-free if you want to read more.)

Bamboo plates start at £9 in our range — still very affordable, but slightly more than silicone.

Silicone Baby Plates: The Pros and Cons

What parents love about silicone plates

Silicone is soft, flexible, and practically indestructible. You can drop a silicone plate from a high chair, a toddler can throw it across the room (and they will), and it'll just bounce. That durability is a real selling point for parents in the thick of early weaning.

Silicone is also incredibly easy to clean. Most of our silicone baby plates are dishwasher safe, which makes the end-of-mealtime clear-up significantly less painful. They don't stain in the way bamboo can, and they don't need any ongoing maintenance like oiling.

Our silicone plates come in fantastic shapes — the dinosaur plate is a firm favourite, the hamburger plate consistently surprises and delights small people, and the squirrel and elephant designs are genuinely beautiful. They're all made from food-grade silicone and priced from just £5, making them brilliant value for a first weaning plate.

The soft, grippy texture of silicone also means the suction base tends to be extremely effective — the flexibility of the material helps it create a really strong seal on smooth surfaces.

The honest downsides of silicone

Silicone plates are softer and more flexible than bamboo, which means a determined baby or toddler can sometimes peel them off the high chair tray more easily than a rigid bamboo plate. Some parents also find that food slides around more on a silicone surface compared to the firmer base of a bamboo plate.

Silicone also doesn't have the same natural, organic aesthetic as bamboo. If you're going for a particular look in your weaning setup — lots of natural wood and muted tones — bamboo fits that vibe better.

So Which Should You Choose?

Honestly? It depends on your lifestyle and what matters most to you.

Choose bamboo if:

  • You want a natural, eco-friendly material that's biodegradable
  • You prefer the look and feel of something more like traditional crockery
  • You don't mind hand washing and a little monthly maintenance
  • You want firm divided sections that a toddler can't easily breach

Choose silicone if:

  • You want maximum convenience — dishwasher safe and zero maintenance
  • You want a plate that can really take a beating (and a throw)
  • You're after a bright, fun shape that'll make your baby smile at the table
  • You're just starting out and want an affordable first weaning plate

Or do what a lot of parents do — start with a silicone plate for the early months when everything is going in the dishwasher twice a day, then add a bamboo plate as your little one gets a bit older and mealtimes become slightly less of a full biohazard situation.

Both bamboo and silicone are infinitely better choices than plastic. And at For the Baby, both ranges are affordable, independently safety-tested, and designed to make weaning that little bit easier — for your baby and for you.
