🚶 Walking is the activity, the car is the excuse

New walkers need a reason to cross the room, and something trundling along behind them is a very good one. Pulling a toy while walking is harder than it looks: it means holding the cord, moving forward, and glancing back to check on the car, all at once. That combination is why pull-alongs have been in toy boxes for a hundred years.

🐻 The bear is the second toy

He lifts out and drops back into his seat, which turns one toy into two. Taking something out and putting it back is a genuine milestone at this age — it needs a pincer grip, a bit of aim and the patience to line him up — and it means the car still gets played with sitting down, on days when walking isn't the mood. He is also, inevitably, the bit that gets carried round the house on his own.

❓ Frequently asked questions

How long is the pull cord?
60cm — long enough for a toddler to walk without the car clipping their heels. As with any toy on a cord, it's one for supervised play on the floor, and it shouldn't go in a cot or anywhere your little one sleeps.

Can the bear be lost?
He can, because he lifts out — that's the point of him. He's a chunky wooden piece rather than a fiddly one, but if loose pieces disappear in your house, it's worth knowing there's one here.

What age is it for?
From 12 months, and it comes into its own the week they start walking confidently. Before that it's a car to push about on the floor while sitting, with a bear to take in and out, which is no bad thing either.

How big is it?
15cm long and about 235g — a one-handed car rather than a big floor toy. Worth picturing next to a mug before you order, because photographs of wooden toys are notoriously flattering.

Will it mark the floor?
Wooden wheels on hard floors are noisy rather than damaging, but as with any wooden pull-along, grit caught in a wheel is what causes scratches. Worth a wipe if it's been outside.

Does it need batteries?
No. Nothing to switch on, nothing to run down, and no electronic engine noise.

How do I clean it?
A damp cloth. Painted wood shouldn't be soaked and mustn't go in the dishwasher.

Is the paint safe if it's chewed?
Yes — non-toxic, child-safe paint on FSC-certified wood, UKCA and CE certified. Expect both car and bear to be mouthed at this age.

Does it make a good gift?
It's a lovely small one: a proper wooden toy with two things to do, at a price that suits a stocking, a christening or an add-on to something bigger.
