Bunny Baby Comforter β€” Bonnie Bunny, 35cm, with two silicone teething rings

A soft plush bunny, 35cm head to toe and 30cm across, with long ears, knotted ends for small hands to work at, and two food-grade silicone rings sewn in for chewing. Polyester cover and filling, hand wash only. One of three comforters we stock in the same design, so the animal really is the only difference between them.

πŸ›οΈ Where a comforter belongs, and where it does not

We would rather lead with this than bury it, because almost every comforter on the internet is sold on a photograph of a baby asleep next to one.

UK safe-sleep guidance from the Lullaby Trust and the NHS is to keep a baby's sleep space clear β€” no soft toys, no comforters, no loose bedding β€” with soft toys generally going into the cot from around twelve months. A 35cm plush toy in a cot with a young baby is a suffocation risk, and no amount of softness changes that.

So this is a daytime comforter for the first year: for the pram, the car seat, the play mat, a lap, and the ten minutes of settling before sleep. A common suggestion from health visitors is to hold it yourself during feeds so it picks up your scent, let the baby have it while you settle them, and then lift it out of the cot before you put them down. From a year or so, when your own guidance says so, it can stay in with them. Our guide to when to introduce a comforter, and how to do it safely goes through the whole question properly.

πŸͺ’ Knotted ends and two teething rings, and when each starts to earn its keep

The features arrive at different ages, which is why a comforter outlasts most baby toys:

  • From birth β€” it is something soft to be held near, nothing more. Honest answer: a newborn does not form attachments to objects yet.
  • From around three or four months β€” the ears and the knotted ends become the point. Both are thin enough for a hand that cannot yet open and close deliberately to catch hold of, and plush is forgiving when they pull.
  • From around six months β€” the silicone rings. Teething varies enormously, but this is the usual window, and a ring attached to something they already like beats a teether they have to be handed.
  • From around eight to twelve months β€” the attachment itself. This is when a comforter stops being a toy and becomes the specific object that has to come to the childminder.

πŸ‘‚ What the ears actually add

Of the three animals, the bunny is the one with an extra pair of handles on it. Long soft ears are easy to grip, easy to find without looking, and tend to be what a baby reaches for first β€” and later, what gets chewed, carried and sucked. It is a small difference between three otherwise identical comforters, but it is the one real one.

🧺 Hand wash only, which is the reason we would buy two

Here is the thing nobody tells you before your first child. If a comforter becomes the comforter, it cannot be washed at a convenient moment β€” it gets washed when it is unspeakable, which is the day it is needed most, and a hand-washed plush toy takes the better part of a day to dry properly.

Parents who have been through it once buy two of the same animal and quietly rotate them. We mention it knowing exactly how it reads coming from the people selling them, but it is the single most useful piece of comforter advice there is, and you can take it to any shop you like. It applies doubly to the bunny, because wet ears stay wet.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Can it go in the cot?
Not with a young baby. Keep the sleep space clear and use it in the daytime and while settling, with soft toys going into the cot from around twelve months. Follow your own health visitor's guidance over anything on a product page.

Which of the three should I pick?
The bunny if you want the ears, which genuinely are easier to grab than anything on the other two. Otherwise whichever animal you prefer β€” lamb and bear are the same comforter in a different shape.

Is it machine washable?
No, hand wash only, and that is a real limitation rather than a small print detail. It is why buying two of the same animal is worth considering if it becomes the one they cannot be without.

Will the ears come loose if they are pulled?
They are sewn in rather than glued, and plush absorbs a lot of pulling. Check the seams where the ears meet the head along with the ring attachments, and stop using it if a seam starts to open.

Is it natural fibre?
No β€” the cover and the filling are both polyester. We would rather say so than imply otherwise. Polyester is what makes it soft, washable and hard-wearing; if natural materials matter to you, our wooden toys and silicone feeding range are where we concentrate that.

Does it make a good gift?
One of the best, because it is the kind of thing parents do not buy for themselves until they realise they need one. It is also useful immediately, which most new-baby presents are not.

🧸 The three comforters

The same comforter in three animals. 35cm, knotted ends, two silicone rings, hand wash:

  • Bonnie Bunny β€” this one. Long ears, which give a baby an extra pair of handles.
  • Lammy Lamb β€” the softest-looking of the three, and the usual choice as a present.
  • Benni Bear β€” the classic teddy shape, and the one that reads least like a baby item as they get older.

See all of them in our baby comforters collection, or pair one with a rattle or a teether. Everything that works from birth is in one place.

Safety information

For use with adult supervision. Keep a baby's sleep space clear of soft toys and loose bedding, in line with Lullaby Trust and NHS safe-sleep guidance. Check the seams, the ears and the points where the silicone rings are attached before each use, and stop using it if a seam opens, the plush tears or a ring works loose. Keep it away from naked flame.
