Silicone Toy Ambulance β€” 9cm, so it actually leaves the house

A soft one-piece ambulance in food-grade platinum silicone, 9 x 5.5 x 4.5cm, in White and Cream. Suitable from 6 months. It is the smaller of our two silicone vehicles, and that is the whole point of it.

πŸŽ’ Small enough to be the one you have with you

At 9cm it goes in a coat pocket, and the difference between a toy in a pocket and a toy in a toy box is the difference between having something to hand in a cafe queue and not. There is no fabric to get grubby, nothing to wind up, and no battery to go flat at the wrong moment β€” it comes out, gets chewed and pushed about on a table, gets wiped and goes back in.

If you want the bigger one with an open bed to load and tip out, that is our silicone pick up truck at 11cm. Same material, same age, different job: the truck is the one that does something, this is the one that comes along.

🧸 Bought at six months, it becomes an ambulance at one

A six-month-old does not play with vehicles. They grab, bang and mouth, and a soft silicone ambulance is a very good thing to do all three to β€” nothing hard, nothing to chip, and a smooth body a small hand can close right round. Pushing it along and giving it somewhere to go arrives months later, somewhere past the first birthday.

So the same object earns its keep twice, the better part of a year apart. That is unusual in a toy this size, and it is a fair part of why we stock it.

🀫 Soft wheels, which cuts both ways

Silicone grips. This ambulance travels about a hand's width when pushed and then stops, and it is near-silent on floorboards β€” no clatter, nothing vanishing under the sofa, nothing marking a skirting board. On a rug with a baby, that is exactly right: it stays where they put it.

If what you are after is a vehicle that races across a room for a two-year-old, this is the wrong toy and we would rather say so. Our wooden push and pull toys have hard wheels and proper roll.

πŸ”¬ The same silicone as our feeding range

This comes from the same supplier, and is the same food-grade platinum silicone, as the plates and bowls in our feeding range β€” and that material has been through proper testing. Our silicone plates and bowls were tested as finished products to EN 14372:2004, the European standard for children's feeding utensils, across 15 samples covering 13 colours, with nothing detected in migration of elements, phthalate content, volatile compounds, formaldehyde release or bisphenol A release. A bowl from the range was separately tested by Eurofins to LFGB Sections 30 and 31, the German food-contact standard and among the strictest anywhere, where it passed overall migration, peroxide value and volatile organic matter testing, with no bisphenol A detected and no perceptible odour or taste passing into food.

We would rather be precise about what that covers. Those are tests on the material, and on finished feeding products made from it β€” not on this ambulance. It is the reason we are relaxed about a baby chewing it, and the reports are published on our silicone information page rather than summarised and left at that.

🧽 It cleans in seconds, which matters more than it sounds

One piece of non-porous silicone, no fabric, no battery compartment, no seam for food to work into. A wipe, or warm soapy water, and it is done. It does not mind a puddle, the bath or being chewed on through teething, and it holds no smell. White and Cream are pale, and they clean up β€” which is the only reason we are comfortable selling a pale baby toy.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Ambulance or truck?
Ambulance for the smaller one, 9cm, that lives in a pocket or a changing bag. Truck for the larger one at 11cm with an open bed to fill and tip out, which is the better toy once they are into loading things.

Does it roll properly?
A short distance, slowly, quietly. Silicone wheels grip rather than glide β€” a feature with a baby, a limitation with a toddler who wants speed.

Can they chew it?
It tolerates being mouthed, and at six months everything is β€” it is the same food-grade silicone as the bowls we have had tested for migration and bisphenol A. It is not a teether, though: there is no shape designed to reach back gums. If teething is the problem, our teethers are the right tool.

Will the white one stay white?
Largely, yes. Silicone is non-porous, so marks sit on the surface rather than soaking in, and warm soapy water shifts them. Strongly coloured food left on it overnight is the one thing that can tint it faintly.

Is it a bath toy?
It is fine in the bath and nothing soaks in, but it is solid with no squirt hole, so it neither squirts nor floats well. Our bath toys are built for that.

Does it make a good gift?
A good small one β€” a six-month birthday, a stocking, or the thing you add to make up an order. It is useful the day it arrives and still useful a year later.

🚚 The pair, and what else fits

  • Silicone Toy Ambulance β€” this one. 9cm, white or cream, closed body. The pocket and changing-bag one.
  • Silicone Toy Pick Up Truck β€” 11cm, four colours, open load bed. The one that does something.
  • Silicone toys β€” everything else we stock in the same soft, wipeable, chewable material.
  • Suitable from 6 months β€” the rest of what works at this stage.

Because this one spans such a long stretch, both our stage guides are worth a look: the best toys for a 6 month old for where it starts, and the best toys for a 1 year old for where it ends up.

Safety information

For use with adult supervision. Check the toy over before each play session and stop using it if the silicone splits or tears or any part works loose. Keep it away from sharp objects and naked flame.
