Silicone and Beech Wood Bunny Teether — one piece, which decides how you clean it

A soft silicone bunny on a ring of natural beech, 7 x 9.5cm, in four colours. Suitable from 3 months.

The thing worth knowing before anything else: the bunny and the ring do not come apart. There is no join to work loose and nothing small to separate — and it is also the reason this one cannot be sterilised. More on that below, because it is the question we are asked most.

🐰 Why a ring and a bunny rather than just a ring

The ring is the part a baby can actually hold. A closed circle suits the way young hands work — fingers curl right round it, and it does not need a thumb, which arrives later. A plain ring, though, is a poor teether: it is all one thickness and all one shape.

The bunny is what makes it useful. The ears are narrow and soft enough to reach the back gums, where the molars come through and where a baby cannot get at the ache with a chunky ring. So the ring does the holding and the bunny does the chewing.

🧼 One piece, so no sterilising — here is how to clean it

Wash it in warm soapy water and leave it to drip dry. That is the whole method, and it is not us being casual: because the silicone is fixed to the wood, there is no boiling, no steriliser and no dishwasher. Beech that is repeatedly soaked roughens, darkens and will eventually split, and the seam where silicone meets wood is exactly the place you cannot dry out.

Dry the wooden part with a cloth rather than leaving it wet and it lasts a great deal longer. If being able to sterilise a teether matters to you — and for plenty of parents it does — then an all-silicone one is the honest answer instead. Angus the Cavapoo takes boiling water and the dishwasher without complaint, and we publish the test reports for our all-silicone range on our silicone information page.

✋ From 3 months, and what it does before teeth

A light ring is one of the first things a baby manages to hang on to, somewhere around three to four months, and holding is the skill they are working on at that point. The chewing follows when the gums start to hurt, which for most babies is four to seven months but can be earlier.

We grade this one from three months rather than from birth. A newborn cannot grip, so there is nothing for them to do with it, and we would rather a wooden-ringed teether went to a baby who can hold it.

🎨 Four colours, and nothing else changes

Peach, Baby Pink, Baby Blue and White Marble. The shape, the size and the materials are identical across all four, so this is purely a question of what you would rather look at.

🛡️ Supervision, and what to check

Stay with your baby while they are chewing — that goes for any teether, and it is the single most useful thing on this page.

  • Look the ring over before each use, and run a thumb round the seam where the silicone meets the wood
  • Retire it at the first sign of roughness in the beech, a crack, or the silicone lifting away from the ring
  • Expect the wood to darken a little with use — that is normal; splitting or lifting is not
  • Dry it properly rather than leaving it damp, which is what causes most of the wear

Wooden teethers are consumable items rather than things that last for years. Replacing one that has started to roughen is the right call, not an inconvenience.

What we like about it

  • The ring is the right shape for a hand that cannot grip properly yet
  • The ears are narrow enough to reach the back gums, which a plain ring cannot
  • One solid piece — no join to work loose and nothing designed to come apart
  • Light at 7 x 9.5cm, so it goes in a pocket rather than a bag
  • Four colours, and one of the least expensive things we sell

❓ Frequently asked questions

Can I sterilise it?
No, and this is the one to read before you order. The silicone is fixed to the wood, so boiling, steam sterilising and the dishwasher are all out — any of them would ruin the beech and leave water trapped in the seam. Warm soapy water and a proper drip dry is the method. If you want a teether you can sterilise between uses, buy an all-silicone one instead: Angus the Cavapoo or the Silicone Rattle Teether both take it.

Won't the wood suffer, being chewed and washed?
Beech is dense and hard-wearing, which is why it is the wood used for this sort of thing, but it is still wood. Expect it to darken a little with use, and keep an eye on it — there is a checklist above. That is sensible practice with any wooden teether rather than a fault in this one.

What use is it before my baby has teeth?
It is a grip toy first and a teether second. A ring is one of the easiest shapes for a baby of three or four months to hold on to, and holding is the skill they are working on at that point.

Which colour should I pick?
Entirely cosmetic — same shape, same size, same materials in all four. Peach and White Marble are the quieter two if the nursery is neutral.

Does it make a good gift?
It makes a good extra. It is small and inexpensive, so it works as the thing you add to a card or tuck alongside something bigger, rather than as the present itself.

🔍 Which teether, and why

We sell a lot of teethers and they are not interchangeable. The real question is what you need it to survive:

  • Silicone and Beech Wood Bunny — this one. The nicest to look at and the easiest to hold, but soapy water only.
  • Angus the Cavapoo — all silicone, multiple textures, and you can boil it. The one for a baby who properly chews, and one of the products whose test reports we publish.
  • Silicone Rattle Teether — a teether that also makes a noise, which buys you a few extra minutes.
  • Silicone Wood Teether — our other silicone-and-beech one, from 6 months, with a silicone ring that detaches from the wood.
  • Natural Rubber London Bus — one solid piece of rubber with no hole, so nothing gets inside it. Doubles as a bath toy.

If you want one teether only, make it an all-silicone one you can sterilise. Buy this one because you like it, and because a ring is the shape a small baby holds first.
