Every parent finds out the same way. You squeeze a bath toy, a grey cloud comes out, and you cut it open to see what has been living in there. This little red London bus is sealed shut: no hole, no squirt, nothing to dry out. It starts life as a teether for a brand-new baby and stays useful as a bath toy long after.

🦷 Soft enough for a newborn's gums

Natural rubber has a give that hard plastic and wood don't, so a baby who is only just finding their hands can gum it without needing any strength. The surface is lightly textured — windows, wheels, the moulded lines along the roof — which gives sore gums something to press against. At 11cm long it's a shape small hands can get hold of, and the upper deck makes a natural handle.

It floats, sitting up on the water like a proper bus. Because it's sealed and air-filled there's nothing to squeeze out and nothing to squeeze in, so bath time doesn't end with you shaking water out of a toy. Wash it in warm soapy water, rinse it well, leave it to dry — that's the whole routine.

🌱 Natural rubber, handmade in Sri Lanka

Each bus is made by hand by a small producer in Sri Lanka, from rubber tapped from rubber trees rather than moulded from plastic. It's a renewable material that biodegrades at the end of its life, and it arrives in a simple polybag rather than a plastic tray inside a printed box.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Natural rubber is latex — what if there's a latex allergy in the family?
Worth knowing before you buy: natural rubber is latex. The packaging states 100% natural rubber and carries no allergy statement either way, so we can't tell you more than the label does. If anyone in your family has a known latex allergy, have a word with your health visitor or GP before giving it to your baby.

Can it go in the steriliser or the dishwasher?
We'd say no. The only care instruction Best Years give is warm soapy water and a good rinse, and they don't list it as dishwasher or steriliser safe — so we wouldn't risk the heat on a handmade rubber toy.

Will water get inside it?
No. There's no hole anywhere on it, which is rather the point. That does also mean it doesn't squirt — if a squirter is what your toddler is after, there's one further down.

Does it squeak?
No. A squeaker needs a hole to push air through, and this bus hasn't got one. It's a quiet toy, which some parents will count as a feature.

Is it really suitable from birth?
Yes. It's one piece, soft, with no small parts to come away, and it's UKCA and CE tested for use from birth. For the first few months it's a teether and something to grip; the bath and the pushing-along come later.
