Brand: For the Baby

Organic Muslin Bandana Bibs — the dribble bibs, three to a pack because three is the minimum

Three bandana bibs in double-layered 100% organic cotton muslin, 27 x 24cm, with snap-button closures that adjust as your baby grows. Machine washable at 30°C, CE marked, suitable from birth, in coordinating colours. These are the ones worn all day — not the ones worn at mealtimes.

💧 Absorbent, which is the opposite of waterproof

A muslin bib works by soaking dribble up and holding it away from the skin. That is precisely what a teething baby needs, because the problem is not a spill — it is a steady trickle for weeks on end, and a wet collar leads to a sore neck and chest.

It also means this is the wrong bib for a meal. Wet food will go through double muslin given a few minutes, so for weaning you want something that repels rather than absorbs — our silicone waterproof bib wipes clean at the tap, has a pocket that catches what is dropped, and nothing gets through it. The two are a pair rather than a choice, and our guide to silicone bibs vs muslin bibs explains which belongs where.

🔁 Why there are three, and why you may want more

A heavy dribbler goes through several a day. Three gets you through a day with one in the wash and one spare, which is the honest minimum rather than a generous pack. If your baby is in the thick of teething, a second pack is not extravagant — and it is cheaper than washing the same one every evening.

🧺 A 30°C wash, which is the point of cotton

Straight in the machine at 30°C with everything else, as often as you like. That is the trade against silicone: more laundry, but you can have a clean dry one against the skin all day, which no wipe-clean bib can offer. Muslin dries quickly, and the open weave gets softer with every wash rather than stiffer.

🧣 A bandana, so it does not look like a bib

The triangular bandana shape sits like a scarf rather than a feeding bib, which is the reason these get left on when you go out. Double-layered muslin also gives it enough body to hold the shape instead of going limp and twisting round.

🌿 Organic cotton muslin, and gentle with it

Muslin is a loose, open weave, which is why it is soft from the first wash. Against a newborn's neck — one of the places that chafes first — that matters more than it sounds. The cotton is organic, and the snap fastenings are plastic poppers rather than Velcro, so there is nothing to catch hair or roughen in the wash. The bibs carry CE marking.

Worth saying plainly: we describe these as organic cotton because that is what they are made from, but we hold no GOTS certificate for them. If an audited textile certificate is what you are after, we would rather tell you that now than imply one.

What we like about it

  • Double-layered, so dribble is held away from the skin rather than sitting against it
  • Bandana shape that reads as a scarf, so it stays on out of the house
  • Three in a pack — enough for one on, one in the wash, one spare
  • Machine washable at 30°C, in with everything else
  • Snap-button closures with more than one position, so they last as the neck grows
  • 100% organic cotton muslin, soft from the first wash and softer after each one
  • CE marked
  • Suitable from birth, and still useful through teething at a year

❓ Frequently asked questions

Will these keep food off at mealtimes?
Not reliably. Double muslin absorbs, so wet food soaks through given a little time — these are dribble bibs, not feeding bibs. For meals use our silicone waterproof bib, which nothing gets through and which has a pocket to catch what is dropped. Use these between meals.

Is three enough?
For a light dribbler, yes. In the middle of teething, most families want two packs — one on, one in the wash, and a couple spare for the changing bag and the car.

How do I wash them?
Machine wash at 30°C. Wash before first use, as cotton muslin softens and may tighten very slightly on its first wash. We would dry them flat or on a line where you can — it keeps the weave open and the fabric soft, and muslin dries quickly anyway.

Are they GOTS certified?
No. They are made from organic cotton, and we say so, but we do not hold a GOTS certificate for them. If you want an audited certificate, the honest answer is that this is not the product for it.

What age do they stop being useful?
Dribbling peaks through teething and tails off somewhere past a year. They stay useful longer than you expect as a quick wipe for a face or a hand.

Are the poppers secure?
They fasten firmly and adjust across positions. As with any fastening, check them now and then and retire a bib if a popper works loose.

Do they make a good gift?
One of the safest new-baby gifts there is. Everybody needs dribble bibs, nobody has enough, and a pack of three in coordinating colours looks like a present rather than a practicality.

🧺 Which bib do you need?

They are not alternatives — they do different jobs, and most families end up with both kinds:

  • Organic Muslin Bandana Bibs — this pack. For dribble and teething. Absorbent cotton worn all day, three to a pack, machine washable at 30°C.
  • Silicone Waterproof Bib — for meals. Nothing soaks through, a pocket that catches what is dropped, and one adjusts from 0 to 4 years.
  • Sleeved Bib — for the properly destructive stage. Full arm coverage, for painting and for anything involving a spoon and yoghurt.

See them all in our bibs collection. Our guide to silicone bibs vs muslin bibs covers which to use when, and our complete guide to baby teething explains what else helps when the dribbling starts.

Safety information

Adult supervision recommended. Check the snap fastenings before each use and retire a bib if a popper works loose or the fabric tears. Not for sleep, and not to be left on an unattended child.
