📱 It is not a pretend phone yet, and that matters

Worth being plain about before you buy, because it decides whether this is the right one. A baby under about ten months does not play at phoning anyone — they chew what you hand them and press what gives way. So at this stage this is a teether that happens to be phone-shaped, and that is exactly what it is good at.

🔘 Every button is a popper, not just some of them

That is the difference between this and most silicone phones, which have a popper panel and a lot of decorative moulding around it. Here the whole keypad gives way, so wherever a thumb lands something happens. Pressing one button without pressing its neighbour is harder than it looks and takes real control — which is why it holds attention for months rather than minutes, and why it is still being pressed long after the chewing stage has passed. 🦷 Soft enough for gums, light enough for a newborn

At 45g it is the lightest thing in our teething range, which is the whole reason it works from birth: a baby who has barely any grip can still hold it, and it does no damage when it lands on a face. The silicone is soft and yielding rather than firm, so it suits the sore, swollen stage rather than the stage where a baby wants something hard to push against. For that, a beech ring does more.

🧼 One piece, so it sterilises properly

Nothing separates, nothing unclips, and there is no seam for milk to get behind. Hand wash in warm soapy water, or put it on the top rack of the dishwasher, or boil it for three to five minutes to sterilise — silicone takes all three without warping or going cloudy. That is a real advantage over any teether with wood in it, which cannot be boiled or dishwashed at all.

🔬 What we have actually had tested

Our silicone toys were tested as finished toys by independent accredited laboratories — not just the raw material — covering small parts for a child under three, sharp edges and points, flammability, and heavy metals and phthalates. They passed on every count. Separately the solid silicone itself was tested with nothing detected in migration of 19 elements under EN 71-3, phthalates, 553 PFAS, 15 PAHs, or any of the 247 REACH substances of very high concern.

❓ Frequently asked questions

My toddler wants a phone like mine. Will this do it?
Honestly, no — not past about ten months. It is soft, it is silent and it has no screen, so a toddler who wants your handset will see through it quickly. It is bought for babies who chew. For a toddler, the Mentari Wooden Phone with its cord handle is the one that satisfies them.

Can a baby bite a popper off?
It is one moulded piece, so there is nothing glued or clipped on to come away. Our silicone toys were tested as finished toys for small parts specifically because they are intended for children under three, and they passed. That said, inspect it now and then as you would any teether, and retire it if the silicone ever splits or tears.

It smells faintly of the factory. Is something wrong?
No, and it is common to new silicone. Boil it for a few minutes or run it through the dishwasher before first use and the smell goes. A sensory panel in our Eurofins food-contact testing found no perceptible odour or taste passing into food from this silicone, so it is a surface thing rather than anything coming out of the material.

What age is it really for?
From birth, and it earns its keep from roughly two months, when a baby starts bringing things to their mouth on purpose. The popper-pressing becomes the main event nearer six months, once they can isolate a finger.

Can it go in a steriliser?
Yes. Boil it, steam sterilise it or put it in the dishwasher — silicone will not warp, melt or degrade at sterilising temperatures.

Will it stain?
Silicone can pick up light colour from strongly pigmented food. A soak in warm water with a little bicarbonate of soda lifts it without scrubbing.

Does it make a good gift?
A good small one for a brand-new baby, and an easy one to post. It is also the sort of thing people have not already been given three of.
