A wooden base board, 21 x 21 x 1.8cm, with ten brightly coloured shapes to fit into their slots. Every shape wears a face, and every slot has its mood written beside it, so finding where a piece goes also finds the word for how it feels. Eleven pieces in all, suitable from 24 months. Designed in the UK by Mentari and made in Indonesia from rubberwood, finished in child-safe paint. CE and UKCA marked.

😊 Feelings with names

Happy, sad, surprised, cross. Toddlers feel all of it, usually before breakfast, but finding the words takes longer. Here a child picks up a grumpy triangle, hunts for its home, drops it in, and there is the word waiting. Bit by bit, feelings get names, and a child who can name a feeling has a better chance of telling you about it.

🔺 Still a proper shape sorter

Take the faces away and it is a satisfying puzzle: ten chunky shapes, ten slots, and all the turning and trying that goes with matching one to the other. Once the sorting is easy, the faces keep it going. "Which one are you today?" is a surprisingly good question to ask a two-year-old.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Will it help with tantrums?
It will not stop them. What it gives a two-year-old is words for big feelings, and practising those words when they are calm makes them easier to reach when they are not.

Can a two-year-old do it on their own?
The sorting, usually yes, with a bit of turning and trying. The feelings part works best with you alongside, saying the words and asking which face they feel like.

How do I clean it?
Wipe with a damp cloth. Do not soak painted wood.

Is it a good gift for a second birthday?
Yes. It is a little different from the usual puzzle, and it is still in use at three.
