On the Go Watermelon — the boldest of the three, which newborn eyes prefer

A soft watermelon with a clip, built to attach to a pram, a buggy or a car seat. Ribbon tags to tug, mixed textures to find, a crinkle, a gentle rattle, and a textured teething ring. 16 x 12cm, suitable from birth.

👀 Red, white and green — and that matters more than it looks

Newborn vision is poor and short-range, and it is drawn to contrast rather than to prettiness. A watermelon is three strongly different tones meeting at hard edges: red flesh, white rind, green skin. That is a far easier thing for a few-week-old to focus on than a single pastel colour, which makes this the pick of the three for a very young baby.

🧷 The clip solves the actual problem

Anyone who has retrieved a toy from a puddle, a footwell or the wheel of a shopping trolley knows what the clip is for. A toy that cannot be dropped is a toy that is still there at the end of the walk — and a baby who cannot drop it keeps playing with it instead of losing it.

🦷 A teether where the baby already is

The textured ring means the thing clipped to the pram is also the thing they can chew when gums start aching mid-walk. One fewer item to carry, and one fewer thing to hunt for in a bag at the wrong moment.

What we like about it

  • The strongest contrast of the three — the best of the set for a newborn
  • A clip, so it cannot be dropped, lost or run over
  • Ribbon tags — reliably the first thing a baby goes for
  • A crinkle and a gentle rattle, so there is a reward for moving it
  • A textured teething ring built in
  • Compact at 16 x 12cm and light enough to hang off anything

❓ Frequently asked questions

What will it clip to?
A pram or buggy bar, a car seat handle, a changing bag strap, a play gym. Anything of roughly that thickness. It is a clip rather than a Velcro strap, so it needs something it can close around.

How do I clean it?
Surface wash only — a damp cloth and left to dry. With a rattle, a crinkle and a teething ring inside, there is no machine option. Worth knowing for a toy that lives on the outside of a pram.

Is it really better for a newborn than the others?
On contrast alone, yes — three strong tones beat one. The difference is real but it is not enormous, so if you prefer the look of the avocado or need the smaller size of the apple, neither is a mistake.

Is the rattle loud?
No, it is gentle, and it only sounds when the toy moves.

Is there a bigger version?
Yes — the same three fruits come as large cuddly plushes, and the Cuddly Watermelon is the biggest of them at 33 x 25cm, with two long contrasting legs to grab. Those are for hugging rather than clipping: no clip, no rattle and no teether, but far more to hold.

Is it a good gift?
A good one for a brand-new baby specifically, because of the contrast. It is also one of the few baby toys that gets used every day, because it lives on the pram.

🍉 Which On the Go?

Three of them, all with the same clip, tags, crinkle, rattle and teething ring. They differ on size and colour:

  • Watermelon — this one. 16 x 12cm. Red, white and green together, so the strongest contrast of the three for very new eyes.
  • Avocado — 16 x 12cm. The calmest colour and the one that gets noticed.
  • Apple — 13 x 12cm, the smallest of the three, so the one for a smaller pram or a fuller bag.

And if it is a cuddle you are after rather than something for the pram, all three come as much larger plushes: the Cuddly Watermelon, Avocado and Apple.

Safety information

Adult supervision recommended. Check the clip, the ribbon tags and the teething ring attachment regularly and stop using the toy if anything is damaged or coming loose. Never attach it anywhere it could reach a sleeping baby.
