Reversible Baby Playmat — two sides that do two different jobs

One side is a jungle print: Gina, Tim and the rest of the Little Big Friends cast, for a baby lying on their back with nothing to do but look. Turn it over and you get a patchwork of different fabrics with embroidered detail — a surface meant to be felt rather than looked at, for when your baby is face down and using their hands.

That isn't decoration dressed up as a feature. A newborn spends weeks on their back and then months on their front, and the two sides of this mat map onto those two stages rather neatly.

🧶 The patchwork side is the clever one

Different fabrics stitched together in squares, with embroidery raised enough to find with a palm. For tummy time that matters more than a picture does: a baby pushed up on their forearms is looking at about fifteen centimetres of mat, and what they can reach and grab is the whole of their world for those few minutes.

🤸 Which makes tummy time slightly less of a battle

We won't pretend a mat solves tummy time — most babies object to it at first and there's no fabric on earth that changes that. What a textured surface does is give them something to do while they're down there, which buys you a minute or two more than a plain mat will. A minute or two is the difference between a session and a protest.

🧺 Hand wash only — the one thing to know before you buy

We'd rather say this plainly than bury it. The mat is hand wash only. Little Big Friends' own website describes it as machine washable, but the product itself says otherwise, and we go by what's on the product every time — we've raised it with them.

In practice that means spot cleaning as you go rather than a full wash: deal with a spill while it's wet, sponge the area, don't let a metre of padded fabric soak. During the dribbliest, sickiest weeks a muslin or a thin towel laid over the patchwork side saves most of the work. Treated that way it stays lovely for years. Put through a machine, it very likely won't.

🌿 A metre square, and it folds into a bag

One metre by one metre: the right size for tummy time, floor play and a baby gym over the top, and small enough to go to a grandparent's house under one arm. It isn't a room-sized foam mat and it isn't trying to be. It's PVC free, and it's designed in France.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Can it go in the washing machine?
No — hand wash only. We're saying that clearly because you may well find "machine washable" written elsewhere online, including on Little Big Friends' own page; the product itself says hand wash, and that's what we go by. Day to day it means spot cleaning rather than washing: catch spills while they're wet, sponge them out, and keep a muslin over the top during the messiest months. If a mat you can throw in the machine is non-negotiable for you, this isn't it, and we'd rather you knew before it arrived than after.

Is a metre square big enough?
For what it's for, yes — and it's worth being clear about what that is. This is a tummy-time and floor-play mat for a baby who isn't going anywhere yet, not a crawling-and-toddling play surface for a whole corner of a room. A metre gives you room for a baby, a few toys and an activity arch over the top. Once your little one is properly mobile, a mat this size stops containing them, and that's true of every mat of this kind.

How thick is the padding?
Little Big Friends describe it as soft padding that cushions against hard floors, but they don't publish a thickness and we won't invent one. Treat it as a comfortable fabric mat rather than a thick foam one — lovely on a wooden floor, not a crash mat.

Does it work with the activity arch?
Yes — they're designed together, same range and same jungle theme. The Wooden Activity Arch and Baby Gym stands over the mat with hanging toys above a baby on their back, and the mat's print side faces up underneath. Bought together they make a complete little play space, and they're the same price as each other.

What are the five senses it mentions?
Little Big Friends put a five-senses icon on this one. In practice it's touch doing most of the work — the fabrics and the embroidery — with sight from the print side and sound from the rustle of the materials. We wouldn't buy it for taste or smell, and nor would they expect you to.
