Silicone and Beech Wood Teether β a wooden ring and a popper ring, in one
A smooth beech wood centre ring with a silicone outer ring of six pressable poppers. 11cm across, 52g, suitable from 6 months with adult supervision.
Two different things to do in one object: a firm wooden ring to gnaw on, and poppers to press. The press-and-pop is the part that holds attention long after a plain ring has been dropped β a baby does something and something happens, which is the discovery they are working on at this age.
πͺ΅ Two textures, which is the point
Beech is firm and cool and gives a gum something to push against. Silicone is soft and yielding. A baby who has only ever chewed one of those finds the other genuinely interesting, and the contrast between the two is more use than either on its own.
π The poppers, and what they are for
Six silicone poppers round the outside, each of which gives way under a small thumb and springs back. Pressing them takes more control than grabbing does, so this is a toy a baby grows into rather than out of β most of the interest arrives once they can isolate a finger, somewhere after six months. Our guide to why poppers are brilliant for baby development goes into what that is building.
π§Ό The silicone ring comes off, which cuts both ways
The silicone separates from the wooden ring. That is genuinely useful for cleaning β you can wash and dry the two parts properly instead of scrubbing round a fixed seam, and the wood gets to dry out as wood should.
It also means there is a part designed to come apart, so there are two things to do every time:
- Take it apart to wash it, and keep both halves out of reach while they are separated
- Check the silicone ring is fully seated on the wood before you hand it back
Wash the silicone in warm soapy water. Wipe the beech with a damp cloth and dry it straight away β do not soak, boil, sterilise or put the wooden ring in the dishwasher, because beech that is repeatedly wetted roughens and eventually splits.
π‘οΈ Supervision, and what to check
Stay with your baby while they are chewing. With this one in particular:
- Check before each use that the silicone ring is seated all the way round and has not worked loose
- Look the poppers over for splits or nicks β retire the teether if any of them has torn
- Check the beech for roughness or cracking, and expect it to darken a little with use
- Dry it properly rather than leaving it damp, which is what causes most of the wear
If you would rather have a teether with nothing that separates at all, our bunny teether is one solid piece. If you would rather have one you can sterilise, our all-silicone teethers take boiling water and the dishwasher, and we publish their test reports on our silicone information page.

β Frequently asked questions
Why from 6 months rather than from birth?
Two reasons. The poppers need enough finger control to be worth anything, which arrives later than grabbing does. And because the silicone ring is designed to detach, we would rather it went to a baby whose parent is watching a sitting-up, deliberate chewer than to a newborn. For a newborn, our Silicone Mobile Phone Toy is one solid piece of silicone at 45g, with nothing that separates.
Can I sterilise it?
The silicone part can be washed in hot soapy water, but the wooden ring must not be boiled, steam sterilised or put in the dishwasher. If you want a teether that takes sterilising whole, choose an all-silicone one.
Does the silicone ring come off easily?
It is meant to come off for washing, so it is not a struggle. That is exactly why it is worth a glance each time to confirm it is back on properly.
How does it compare to the bunny teether?
The bunny is one solid piece with nothing that separates, lighter, and graded from 3 months β the better choice for a younger baby. This one has more to do, and suits a baby who is pressing and investigating rather than just holding.
Does it make a good gift?
A good small one, and it looks more considered than most teethers do.
π Which popper toy is right?
We do poppers three ways, and they suit three different stages:
- Silicone Wood Teether β this one. From 6 months, 11cm, 52g. Six poppers round a beech ring, so the only one of the three that also offers something firm to chew β at the cost of not being boilable, because of the wood.
- Silicone Mobile Phone Toy β from birth, 10.5 x 7cm, 45g. Every button is a popper, it is one solid piece, and it is the only one of the three suitable for a newborn.
- Silicone Spinner β from 6 months, 13cm, 36g. Two poppers, and the only one that suctions to the highchair tray, so the only one that cannot be thrown on the floor.
π Our other teethers
- Silicone and Beech Wood Bunny Teether β one solid piece, from 3 months, soapy water only.
- Angus the Cavapoo β all silicone, boilable and dishwasher safe, with published test reports.
- Silicone Rattle Teether β a teether that also makes a noise.
- Natural Rubber London Bus β one solid piece of rubber with no hole, so nothing gets inside it.
