Stacking Train β ten pastel blocks, and the one you can hand over as it is
A wooden train in soft pastel tones with ten stacking blocks in different shapes and three pivoting carriages that come off, 30 x 8 x 7cm, 640g boxed. From jumini's giftable collection, supplied in a rope-handled gift box. CE and UKCA marked, tested to EN 71. Suitable from 1 year. We stock two jumini stacking trains and this is the gentler, earlier, ready-to-give one.
π It arrives ready, which is most of why people buy it
The rope-handled gift box is the point. For a first birthday you are usually buying at short notice, posting it, or taking it to a house where somebody will be handed it in front of other people β and a toy that already looks like a present saves you the paper, the scissors and the fifteen minutes.
Our Classic Stacking Number Train is the same idea in primary colours with six blocks numbered one to six, and it does not come boxed for giving. If this is a present rather than a Tuesday purchase, that difference decides it.
π It starts six months earlier than our other train
This one is rated from 1 year; the numbered train is from 18 months. That gap is the most practical difference between them and the one most people miss.
At a year old a child wants to pull blocks off, drop them, push the train a short distance and take the carriages apart. That is exactly what this is for. The numbered train asks for a bit more β the numbers mean nothing for another eighteen months β so for a first birthday this is the one that works on the day rather than in a year.
πΊ Ten blocks, all different shapes
Ten is a lot for a train this size, and they are shapes rather than numbers β so the first game is not counting but sorting and fitting: which ones sit flat, which ones will not balance, which ones go back on the pegs. That is the right job for a one-year-old, and ten pieces is enough that two children can play without one of them running out.
The honest flip side is that ten loose wooden blocks is ten things to lose. Less painful here than on the numbered train, where a set running one, two, three, five, six is noticed by everybody β but still worth a box or a shelf rather than the bottom of a toy basket.
π Three carriages, and they pivot
They come off entirely, and they pivot where they join. Pivoting matters because the train then follows round a chair leg instead of jack-knifing and tipping over, which is the usual reason a toddler gives up on a multi-part train in the first week. Coming apart matters because taking things apart is the entire job at this age β and taken apart you have an engine, three loose carriages and ten blocks, which a toddler experiences as several toys rather than one.
π¨ Pastels, and an honest word about who they are for
Soft tones and clean lines, so it sits quietly in a sitting room instead of taking it over. We should be straight that this is an adult preference rather than a child-development one: young children pick out strong contrast more readily than muted colour, and if you want a toy chosen for the child's eyes rather than your shelves, primary beats pastel.
Wanting your house to look like your house is still a perfectly reasonable thing to want, and we would rather say that plainly than dress a colour palette up as a learning feature. If the muted look is what drew you here, you are in the right place and you are not sacrificing anything that matters at this age.
β οΈ Worth knowing before you buy
- Wooden wheels are loud on hard floors, and they do not roll on deep carpet. On boards or lino it travels; on a thick rug it gets dragged. If your downstairs is all carpet, our Safari Jeep Play Set runs on rubber wheels and is the quiet one β though it starts at 2 years.
- Ten loose blocks. More to play with and more to lose than the six on the numbered train.
- Shapes, not numbers. Which is right for a one-year-old and runs out of road sooner. If you want a train that is still teaching something at nearly three, the numbered one keeps going longer.
- It is the smallest of our three trains. At 30cm it is a hand-sized toy. Our Speedy Monkey Wooden Stacking Train is 40cm with nineteen blocks if you want the one with the most in the box.
πͺ΅ Wood, and what we will not claim
A wooden toy from jumini, who are a UK family business. It carries CE and UKCA marks and complies with EN 71, the European toy safety standard covering mechanical hazards, flammability and the migration of elements from paints and coatings.
You will find this train described elsewhere as made from sustainable wood. We have taken that claim off this page, because we have not seen a certificate and we are not prepared to imply one. It is wooden, it is solid enough to be stood on, and that is what we can tell you.
What we like about it
- Arrives in a rope-handled gift box, so it needs no wrapping
- Rated from 1 year, six months earlier than our numbered train
- Ten blocks in different shapes β plenty for two children at once
- Three carriages that pivot round corners and come off entirely
- Soft pastel tones that do not take over a room
- 30cm and hand-sized, so it goes in a bag
- CE and UKCA marked, tested to EN 71
- Wooden, with no batteries and nothing to switch off

β Frequently asked questions
Which of your two jumini trains should I buy?
This one if it is a present, or if the child is around a year old, or if you would rather it did not shout β and it has ten blocks against the other's six. The Classic Stacking Number Train if they are eighteen months or more and you want the numbers. Both have carriages that pivot, so that is not the deciding factor.
Will a one-year-old actually play with it?
Yes, though not in the way the photographs suggest. Expect blocks pulled off and dropped, carriages separated, and the engine pushed a short way. Stacking them back on comes later, and putting them back in a particular order later still. You are buying a toy that keeps unlocking.
How many blocks, and what shapes?
Ten, in a mix of shapes and pastel colours. Enough that the sorting is a game in itself, and enough for two children to play at the same time without one running out.
Will it roll on carpet?
Not well β wooden wheels need a hard floor. On carpet it becomes a dragging toy, which toddlers mind far less than adults expect.
Is it big enough to feel like a proper present?
At 30cm and 640g boxed it is hand-sized rather than imposing, but the gift box does a lot of work. If you want visible heft, the 40cm Speedy Monkey train is the bigger box.
How do I clean it?
A damp cloth, no detergents, and do not soak it. At this age the blocks will go in the mouth, so it will need wiping.
Does it make a good gift?
It is built to be one β that is what the giftable collection means. It is the jumini toy we would pick for a first birthday when we did not know the household well.
π Which stacking train?
We stock three, and they genuinely differ:
- Stacking Train β this one. 30cm, soft pastels, ten shaped blocks, three pivoting carriages, in a rope-handled gift box. From 1 year. The gift one, and the earliest.
- Classic Stacking Number Train β also jumini, 31cm, primary colours, six blocks numbered 1 to 6, pivoting carriages. From 18 months. The counting one.
- Wooden Stacking Train β Speedy Monkey, 40cm, the biggest, with a 50cm pull cord and nineteen blocks in five shapes that build houses once they are off the train. From 12 months. The one with the most in the box.
If the stacking matters more than the train, our Cloud Wobbly Stacker is jumini and starts at 12 months, and our Monkey Family Stacker does counting on a fixed base.

Safety information
For supervised play. Contains ten loose blocks β keep them away from younger children who still mouth their toys. Check the blocks, the wheels and the carriage joints before use and stop using the toy if a wheel works loose or the wood splits or splinters. Keep away from water and naked flame.
