Every spread is built around a nursery rhyme, so you are never stuck for what to say. Sing it, do the actions, then ask what is behind the next flap. For a baby, that is a warm voice, bright pictures and a lap to sit on. For a toddler, it becomes a game they can lead: finding the animal, shouting the number, lifting the flap before you can.

Lifting a small flap takes a careful pinch, and doing it sixty times over is very good practice. It is the same finger control that later goes into turning thin pages, holding a crayon and doing up a button.   • It is busy by design. Very young babies may get more from simple, high-contrast pictures first. This one comes into its own as they start to reach and grab.
