One frame, one wire, seven beads. That's it, and at twelve months that's plenty: sliding a bead round a bend takes real concentration the first dozen times. There's nothing to set up, nothing to lose, and no way to get it wrong — which is why it gets picked up unprompted while more complicated toys sit untouched.

Each pass along the wire needs a pinch, a push and a change of direction. That's dexterity, hand-eye coordination and a bit of patience, all disguised as messing about with beads. The colours give you something to talk about long before they can tell you what they are — and somewhere around two, they'll start sorting the beads by colour without being asked.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Is it too simple — will they get bored?
At twelve months, no: the challenge is in the doing, not the variety. By around two and a half it will have been mastered, and that's the point at which our 5 in 1 Activity Cube or Rocking Beads Maze give them something more to work at. As a first bead maze at this price, it's hard to better.

How big is it?
13.1cm square and 18cm tall — genuinely lap-sized. If you were expecting the big multi-wire sort you see in waiting rooms, this isn't that, and it isn't priced like it either.

Can the beads come off?
No. They're fixed on the wire, so there's nothing small to lose and nothing to worry about.

What age is it for?
From 12 months. A younger baby will enjoy watching the beads move if you do the pushing; the deliberate sliding comes at around a year.

Does it make any noise?
Only wooden beads clacking. No batteries, no electronics, nothing to switch off.

Is the paint safe if it's chewed?
Yes — non-toxic, child-safe paint on FSC-certified wood, UKCA and CE certified. Mouthing is entirely normal at this age.

How do I clean it?
A damp cloth only, and no detergents. Painted wood shouldn't be soaked or go anywhere near a dishwasher.

Does it make a good gift?
It's a good small one — the sort of present you add to something else, or bring out for a first birthday when you don't want to arrive with anything enormous.
