Cream Bunny Organic Comforter — two textures in one flat, light thing a newborn can actually hold

A 25cm knitted comforter in GOTS-certified organic cotton, with a linen panel on the underside and a pom pom at each of the four corners. It is flat, light and square-ish rather than being a toy with a body, which is the whole reason a comforter works for a baby too young to grip anything properly.

🧦 Soft knit one side, linen the other

Turn it over and it changes. The top is a fine, soft knit; the underside is linen, which is smoother and drier with a faint grain to it. For a baby in the first months, when a hand is still finding out what things feel like, a single object that offers two clearly different surfaces is worth more than two objects that feel the same.

🔴 The pom poms are the bit they actually hold

Four corners, four pom poms. Newborns cannot grip a flat sheet of fabric, but they can get a fist round a small round thing — which is why the corners of a comforter matter more than the middle. These are the handles, and they are the part that will get chewed first.

🌙 A comforter is a different job from a cuddly toy

A soft toy is something a baby plays with. A comforter is something they settle with, and the two are not interchangeable. The point of this one is that it is small, flat and light enough to be held against a face during a feed or a wind-down, and familiar enough after a few weeks that it starts doing the settling on its own.

Our guide to baby comforters goes through how the attachment forms and why buying two of the same one is the most useful thing you can do.

What we like about it

  • Two genuinely different textures — soft knit one side, linen the other
  • A pom pom at each corner, which is what a newborn's hand can actually close around
  • Flat and light at 25cm, so it suits a baby from the first week rather than from four months
  • GOTS-certified organic cotton, as stated by ThreadBear
  • Cream, so it goes in any nursery and suits a baby whose name you don't know yet
  • Designed in the UK, and no batteries or sound of any kind

❓ Frequently asked questions

Can it go in the cot?
Not for unsupervised sleep. Safer sleep guidance is to keep the cot clear, so a comforter is for cuddles, feeds and pram time while you are there, and comes out once your little one is settled on their own. Worth saying plainly, because a comforter rather invites the question — and it is the reason the attachment tends to form around feeds rather than at night.

How do I wash it?
Hand wash only, and we will be straight with you about why: there are no care instructions printed on this one. With a cotton knit, a linen panel and four pom poms we are not prepared to guess at a machine cycle, so we are telling you to hand wash it and telling you that is our call rather than ThreadBear's. Warm water, a little non-bio, a gentle squeeze, dried flat.

It will get covered in milk. Is hand wash only a problem?
It is the honest drawback, and a comforter gets the worst of it. Two things help: buy two if you possibly can, so one can be drying, and rinse it the same day rather than letting it sit. If machine washable matters more to you than organic cotton, our Tim the Tiger comforter goes in at 30 degrees on a delicate cycle.

Is it big enough to be useful?
At 25cm it is deliberately small — that is what makes it a comforter rather than a blanket. Small enough to go in a bag, be held in one hand, and not be a loose-bedding concern when you are sitting with them.

Is it a good baby shower gift?
One of the best, and for a specific reason: it is useful in week one. Most new-baby gifts are for a baby who is a few months off. Cream also means you do not need to know the name or the nursery.

Safety information

Adult supervision recommended. Remove from the cot when your little one is sleeping unsupervised, in line with safer sleep guidance. Inspect the pom poms, seams and stitching regularly and stop using it if anything is coming loose.
