Pull the sun through the planet. Then do it again.

Babies love pulling things. Tissues out of boxes, wipes out of packets, books off shelves — the pull is the whole appeal. This little planet gives them somewhere to do it that isn't your laundry pile.

Five soft silicone cords in weather-inspired shapes — a sun, a star, a moon, a cloud and a rainbow — thread through the planet base, ready to be tugged, pushed back through and tugged again. It's simple, repetitive and utterly absorbing, which is exactly what a six-month-old is after.

Why pulling is such good work

Threading and pulling is a classic Montessori activity for a reason. Grasping a cord, pulling it through and watching it disappear out the other side takes coordination, control and a bit of thinking — and it's the same set of skills that later become doing up buttons and holding a pencil.

There's real problem-solving in it too. Where did it go? Can I push it back? What happens if I pull two at once? A baby will work through all of that at their own pace, entirely absorbed, which is the whole point of independent play.

Pop-it buttons for good measure

The planet itself is covered in pop-it buttons — soft silicone bubbles that push in and out with a satisfying give. It's a completely different sensation from pulling the cords, so there are two distinct games in one small toy.

It's also brilliantly fidget-friendly, which means it holds attention in exactly the places you need it to: the high chair, the pram, the restaurant table, the waiting room.

Made for teething mouths

At six months, teething is usually well underway and everything gets chewed. The soft cords are made from food-grade silicone that's completely non-toxic and BPA free, with a gentle, flexible texture that feels good on sore gums. So when it goes in the mouth — and it will — that's absolutely fine.

What they're learning

  • Fine motor skills – gripping, pulling and pushing back through
  • 👀 Hand-eye coordination – lining up cord and hole
  • 🧠 Problem solving – working out where things go and how they come back
  • 🌈 Tactile exploration – smooth cords, popping buttons, soft silicone
  • 🦷 Teething relief – safe, soothing and chewable

Small enough to come with you

At 10 x 10 x 9cm and light as anything, it drops straight into a changing bag. No batteries, no noise, nothing to fall off and get lost under a café table. Just a self-contained little planet that buys you a genuinely useful stretch of quiet.

Easy to keep clean

Silicone is dishwasher safe, or wash by hand in warm soapy water. It can also be sterilised by microwave, cold water or steam — handy, given how much time it'll be spending in someone's mouth.

Part of the Jumini range

Jumini make beautifully considered toys from thoughtful materials, with calm, gentle designs made to be kept rather than replaced. This one sits alongside the rest of our Jumini collection — a lovely, practical addition to a baby gift.
