🐒 The limbs are the whole appeal

Long, loose crocheted arms and legs are the easiest thing in the world for a baby to grab. They do not spring back out of a small fist the way a firmly stuffed toy does, they drape over a hand, and they are exactly the right thickness for fingers that cannot yet manage a thumb. A floppy toy gets held; a rigid one gets dropped.

Crochet also has a texture plush does not — ridged, slightly nubbly, and interesting under a palm. For a baby doing most of their learning through their hands, that counts.

🧺 Machine washable, properly

Warm wash on a delicate setting, and then the bit that matters with crochet: reshape him while he is damp and leave him to air dry. Do not tumble dry and do not wring him out — both will pull the stitches out of shape, and neither is recoverable. Wash dark colours separately the first time or two.

Handled that way he keeps his shape indefinitely, which is more than can be said for most knitted toys.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Does he rattle?
No. He is a soft toy rather than a rattle — that is the difference between him and the rest of the range. If you want a sound, the cherries, peapod, clown fish and London bus are all rattles in the same organic cotton.

What age is he for?
From birth. Early on he is something to be shown and handed; the grabbing starts properly around three or four months, which is when the limbs earn their keep.

Can he really go in the machine?
Yes, warm on a delicate cycle. The two rules are no tumble dryer and no wringing — reshape him while damp instead and let him dry naturally.

Is every one the same?
Not exactly. They are crocheted by hand, so there is a little variation in stitch and expression from one to the next. We think that is the point rather than a fault.

Does he make a good gift?
