Scruffy Dog is applying for the job. He's a soft black-and-white pup with floppy black ears, a friendly face and a pair of removable overalls, and he is very keen to get started.

Removable overalls, and why toddlers love them

Scruffy's little overalls come off. For a baby that's simply another texture to explore, but for a toddler it becomes a whole activity in itself — off, on, off again, with tremendous concentration.

Dressing and undressing is proper practice: fastenings, sleeves, working out which bit goes over the head first. It's fine motor skill and patient problem-solving disguised as play, and it's exactly the sequence they'll need when it's their own coat in the morning.

Just the right size

At 18cm he's small enough for tiny hands to hold and carry, and small enough to slip into a changing bag, a pram or a suitcase. Big enough to properly cuddle, small enough to come everywhere. That's a harder balance to strike than it sounds.
