Seven farm animals that lift out and stand up on their own

Most first puzzles stop being interesting the moment the last piece goes in. This one doesn't, because the seven animals aren't really puzzle pieces — they're chunky wooden farm animals that happen to live in a board. Take them out and they stand up on the floor, and the farm carries on somewhere else entirely.

🐴 Seven animals, and all of them have a name

Horse, lamb, cow, dog, pig, hen and duck. At this age naming is as much of the game as placing — you say "duck", they hand you the duck, and a few weeks later they're saying it back. Seven familiar farmyard animals is a good deal more useful for early vocabulary than seven abstract shapes, and it's why this kind of puzzle earns its place before a child can do any actual puzzling.

The pieces are thick — the whole board is 2cm deep — so they're picked up with a fist rather than a fingertip grip a one-year-old hasn't developed yet. Underneath each slot is a full-colour farm scene, so even when the piece is out there's something to look at and talk about.

Because each animal stands upright unaided, they get played with well away from the puzzle — lined up along the windowsill, taken to the bath queue, tucked into a pocket. Expect to find the duck under the sofa. That's the toy doing its job, not failing at it.

❓ Frequently asked questions

You sell three farm puzzles — which one do I actually want?
A fair question, and they're closer than we'd like. Shortest version: the Farm Peg Puzzle is the easiest to start with, because the pegs give small fingers something to hold. This one is the one to pick if you want named animals and pieces that stand up and get played with off the board. The Chunky Barn Shape Puzzle has a barn-shaped board and line drawings rather than a colour scene underneath, which makes the matching slightly harder. All three are wooden, FSC and rated from a year.

The box says 1 to 3 years. Is that really all the use I'll get?
That's the window in which the puzzling is the right level of difficulty — by three, seven chunky pieces won't hold anyone's attention. But the animals are the part that outlasts the board: they stand up, they get carried about, and they end up in a farm on the rug long after the puzzle itself is easy. We'd rather quote the packaging honestly than pretend it's a toy for five-year-olds.

Will a one-year-old manage it?
They'll manage taking the animals out long before they manage putting them back, and that's completely normal. Expect several months of lifting, carrying and handing pieces to you before the matching clicks. It isn't a sign the puzzle is too hard — it's the stage before.

Do the pieces really stand up on their own?
They do. That's the thing that makes this one worth having over a flat puzzle: seven animals that work as a toy as well as a puzzle.

How do I clean it?
Wipe with a damp cloth and don't soak it. Painted wood doesn't take kindly to sitting in water — and at this age it will need wiping, because everything goes in the mouth first.
