Ring stackers have a peg that holds everything up. These do not. Each scarecrow sits on the one below, so the tower gets taller and less steady with every piece, and the tension of "will this one stay?" is what makes it worth playing again. Take turns and it becomes a game for two or more, which is the moment it stops being a toy and starts being something a family plays together.

🔢 Numbers without a lesson

It is a play toy with numbers on it, and that is the right way round. Nobody has to use the numbers for it to work. When a child is ready, they start lining the scarecrows up 1 to 10 without being asked — and that is the moment the counting takes care of itself.

⚠️ Worth knowing before you buy

• It is rated 3 years and up. The box says so and we follow it. For a younger child who likes counting, the Wooden Farm Dominoes start at 2.
• The tower will fall. That is the game. A child who wants a tall, steady build will be happier with a ring stacker.
• Painted wood is wipe-clean only. A damp cloth, never a soak.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Why 3 years and up? It looks like a toddler toy.
It does, and plenty of younger children would get on with it perfectly well. But the box says 3 years and up, and we don't second-guess a manufacturer's age rating — they've had the set tested and we haven't. If you're buying for a younger child who's keen on counting, the Wooden Farm Dominoes start at 2 and have numbers on one side.

How big is each scarecrow?
9.5 x 7.5 x 2.5cm — about the size of a deck of cards laid flat, and a good deal chunkier than most counting pieces, which is what makes them stackable in the first place.

Do they actually balance, or do they just fall over?
Both, and the falling over is most of the appeal. They stack into a tower that gets progressively more precarious, which is exactly the tension that makes a stacking game worth playing more than once.

Is it a maths toy or a play toy?
A play toy with numbers on it. When a child is ready, the numbers are there; until then, it is a wobbly tower and a row of scarecrows.

How do I clean it?
Wipe with a damp cloth and don't soak it. Painted wood doesn't take kindly to sitting in water.
