Jackson the Musical Lion — he plays Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata"

Pull the cord on his lower front and a mechanical music box inside plays the opening of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata", then slows and stops. No batteries, no speaker, no app — just a clockwork movement in a soft lion, 21cm tall.

Which tune it plays is the whole decision here, and it is the thing most shops forget to tell you. We sell four of these animals and they each play something different. You will hear the one you choose several hundred times, so pick for your own ears as much as your baby's.

🎵 The one adults choose for themselves

Three of these four play nursery tunes. This one plays Beethoven, and it is noticeably the choice people make when they are buying for a nursery they have decorated carefully, or when they simply cannot face another round of "Twinkle Twinkle".

It works as a lullaby on its own terms too. The opening of the Moonlight Sonata is slow, quiet and built on a repeating figure — which is, structurally, exactly what a lullaby is. Beethoven marked it to be played softly throughout. You are not compromising on the settling to get a tune you like.

🧩 A mechanical movement, which is rather the point

Clockwork rather than electronic means no batteries to replace at bedtime, no volume that creeps up, and a tune that winds down naturally instead of stopping dead. That slowing at the end is a far better signal to a baby that something is finishing than an abrupt silence.

The trade-off is honest: a mechanical movement plays one tune, at one volume, and it will eventually wear out. These are lovely for a few years rather than heirlooms for three children.

🦁 A mane to hold on to

He is a proper plush lion rather than a hard music box in a fabric jacket — and the mane gives him something the other three haven't got: a change of texture right next to a smooth face. Small hands find an edge between two surfaces far more interesting than a uniformly soft toy, so there is something here for a baby to do between performances. At 21cm he is the tallest of the four, alongside Gina.

🌿 PVC free, and quiet in the nicest way

Little Big Friends make these PVC free, and the range runs on muted colours rather than primary brights — which is why these tend to end up on a nursery shelf rather than in the toy box. He carries UKCA and CE marking and is suitable from birth.

What we like about it

  • Plays Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" — the grown-up choice of the four
  • Still a proper lullaby: slow, quiet and repeating, as Beethoven marked it
  • A mechanical music box, so no batteries and no creeping volume
  • A pull cord on the lower front, so a toddler can start it themselves
  • A mane against a smooth face — two textures, which none of the others have
  • PVC free, UKCA and CE marked, and suitable from birth

❓ Frequently asked questions

There's a cord on a toy for a newborn — is that a problem?
It is the thing to know first, so here it is. The cord sits on the lower front and retracts into the body as the music plays; it is how you start the tune, not a pull-along lead trailing behind a toddler. Even so, our line on anything corded does not change: this is for supervised play, and it should not be left in a cot, a pram or a playpen with a baby on their own. Start the music, put him beside them while you are there, and take him out of the cot when you leave the room.

Can he be washed?
No — wipe clean with a damp cloth and let him air dry. There is a clockwork movement inside, so soaking or a machine would be the end of it. The mane is the part that will flatten where it is gripped; fingers through it while it is damp lifts it back. If you want something built for the dribbling phase, a squeaker rattle or a silicone teether takes that punishment and this does not.

Is classical music really better for babies?
No, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. There is no good evidence that Beethoven makes a baby cleverer, whatever the compilation CDs claimed in the nineties. What settles a baby is a quiet, repeated, familiar sound — and any of these four does that. Choose this one because you would rather hear it, which is a perfectly good reason.

Will I get sick of the tune?
Less than most, which is rather the appeal. A favourite musical toy gets played every day and one mechanical movement plays one melody, so the tune matters more than the animal. That is why we list all four rather than leaving you to discover yours in week three.

Does it make a good gift?
The one to pick for parents who have views about their house. It is a present for them as much as the baby: it adds a step to the bedtime routine rather than another thing in the toy pile. The matching Tiny Friends Jackson makes it a pair without doubling the cost.

🎶 Which tune? All four musical animals

Same soft make, same mechanical movement, same pull cord. The tune is the real difference, so choose on that:

  • Jackson the Lion — this one, 21cm. Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata". The grown-up choice.
  • Vincent the Elephant — 19cm. Brahms' Lullaby, the tune most people mean by "music box", and the most compact of the four.
  • Gina the Giraffe — 21cm. "Hush Little Baby", the one most parents can sing along to.
  • Tim the Tiger — 17cm, the smallest. "Talk to the Animals", which is not a lullaby at all. The daytime one.

Three lullabies and one that isn't — worth knowing before you order the tiger for bedtime.
