Farm Tractor and Trailer with Bales β€” the vehicle for a farm, not just a tractor

A wooden tractor with a pivoting removable trailer, a peg-person farmer, his dog, and three wooden bales marked with the numbers 1, 2 and 3 and the letters A, B and C. 25 x 8 x 9cm, 554g boxed, in a rope-handled gift box. CE and UKCA marked, tested to EN 71. Suitable from 18 months. It is part of jumini's farm range, and that is the thing worth understanding before you buy.

🚜 It connects to a farm you may already have

This is not a standalone tractor. jumini's farm vehicles and trailers are designed to be swapped between sets, and the sets themselves connect to one another β€” so the tractor is the piece that services the rest of the farm rather than a toy that sits on its own.

We stock two of those sets: the Chicken Coop Set and the Pig Sty Toy Set, both also from 18 months. If you have either, the tractor is the obvious next piece β€” something to arrive at the sty with, something to take the bales away in. If you have neither, this is still a good wooden tractor, but you are buying the first piece of a system, and systems have a way of continuing. Worth knowing that now rather than in March.

πŸ”„ The trailer pivots, which is not a small detail

The trailer joins the tractor on a pivot and comes off entirely. Pivoting matters because it means the thing follows round a chair leg instead of jack-knifing and tipping over, which is the usual reason a toddler gives up on a two-part vehicle in the first week. Coming off matters because taking things apart is most of what this age wants to do β€” and because an empty trailer is a thing to load, which is a game in itself.

πŸ§‘πŸŒΎ The farmer and the dog do the actual work

A tractor on its own gets pushed about. A tractor with a driver and a dog gets a story: the farmer gets in, the dog sits in the trailer, they go to the sty, the dog falls out, everybody is fetched back. Pretend play starts somewhere around eighteen months to two years and the two figures are what unlocks it β€” they matter far more to how much this toy gets used than the bales do.

Which brings us to the honest bit about those bales.

πŸ”’ Three numbers and three letters, and what that is really worth

The bales are marked 1, 2, 3 and A, B, C, and the range calls them educational. We would rather be straight with you: three numbers and three letters do not make a counting set or an alphabet. They make three blocks that happen to be marked, and at eighteen months they are things to load into a trailer and tip out again, which is exactly right for the age and has nothing to do with literacy.

Letter recognition generally arrives after three; understanding that the bale marked 2 stands for two of something lands somewhere around two and a half. By then the marks give you something to talk about β€” "pass me the B one" β€” and that is a genuine use. It is just not the reason to buy it. The reason to buy it is the tractor, the trailer and the farmer.

πŸͺ΅ Wood, and what we can and cannot tell you

Wooden, with child-safe paints and lacquers, and it carries CE and UKCA marks with EN 71 compliance β€” the European toy safety standard covering mechanical hazards, flammability and the migration of elements from paint.

jumini are a UK family business and the tractor is British designed. Designed, not made β€” those are different things and plenty of listings blur them, so we say which one we mean. On the wood's origin we are not going to repeat a certification we have not verified ourselves, so you will not find a sourcing claim on this page.

⚠️ Worth knowing before you buy

  • The farmer and the dog are small and loose. They are also the pieces that make the pretend play work, so losing the farmer is a real loss in a way that losing a bale is not. This set deserves a box or a shelf rather than the bottom of a toy basket.
  • Wooden wheels are loud on hard floors and they do not roll on deep carpet. On boards or lino this tractor travels properly; on a thick rug it gets dragged. If your downstairs is all carpet, a toy that does not depend on rolling will see more use.
  • It is from 18 months, not from birth. If you are buying for a baby, our simple wooden tractor has no loose pieces and starts far earlier.
  • Ages quoted elsewhere vary. You will find this tractor listed as 1 year plus and as 3 to 10 years depending where you look. We publish 18 months, which is what the range is rated at and what matches the rest of the farm sets. If you want the figure straight off the box before you buy for a very young child, ask us and we will read it to you.

What we like about it

  • A trailer that pivots, so it follows round corners instead of tipping
  • Trailer comes off entirely β€” and jumini's farm trailers are interchangeable
  • A peg farmer and a dog, which is what turns pushing into playing
  • Three bales to load and tip out, marked 1-3 and A-C
  • Connects with the Chicken Coop and Pig Sty we already stock
  • Arrives in a rope-handled gift box, so it needs no wrapping
  • CE and UKCA marked, tested to EN 71
  • Wooden rather than plastic, with no batteries and nothing to switch off

❓ Frequently asked questions

Are the bales really educational?
Not in the way the word implies, and we would rather say so. Three numbers and three letters are not a counting set or an alphabet. They are three blocks that happen to be marked, and at eighteen months they are cargo. The marks become useful conversation somewhere past two and a half. Buy it for the tractor and the farmer.

Does it work with your other farm sets?
Yes β€” jumini's farm range is modular, the trailers are interchangeable between vehicles, and the sets connect. Our Chicken Coop Set and Pig Sty Toy Set are the two we stock, both from 18 months.

Will it roll on carpet?
Not well. Wooden wheels need a hard floor. On carpet it becomes a dragging toy, which toddlers mind considerably less than adults expect β€” but it is worth knowing.

How easy are the farmer and the dog to lose?
Easy, and they are the pieces you would miss. A peg figure in a sofa is a well-known phenomenon. Keep the set together in its box between plays if you can bear to.

Is it suitable for a one-year-old?
We publish 18 months, which is what the range is rated at. The loose figures are the reason. For a younger child our simple wooden tractor is one solid piece.

How do I clean it?
A damp cloth, no detergents, and do not soak it. At this age the bales will go in the mouth, so it will need wiping.

Does it make a good gift?
A very good one, and it arrives in a rope-handled gift box so it needs no wrapping. The one review on the maker's own site is from a grandparent, which fits what we see β€” this is the sort of present a grandparent enjoys buying as much as the child enjoys getting.

🚜 The jumini farm, and what else fits

The farm range is modular, so the pieces compound. What we stock:

  • Farm Tractor and Trailer with Bales β€” this one. The vehicle, with a farmer, a dog and three bales. From 18 months.
  • Chicken Coop Set β€” a place to drive to. From 18 months.
  • Pig Sty Toy Set β€” another one. From 18 months.
  • Pop Up Farm Animals β€” the simpler farm toy, from 12 months.

If it is the farm theme rather than the vehicle that appeals, our chunky wooden farm puzzle starts at 12 months, the farm lacing game at two years and wooden farm dominoes at two as well. For a plain tractor with nothing to lose, our wooden tractor toy is one solid piece.

Safety information

For supervised play. Contains small loose parts β€” keep the farmer, the dog and the bales away from children under three who are not being supervised. Check the wheels and the trailer pivot before use and stop using the toy if a wheel works loose or the wood splits or splinters. Keep away from water and naked flame.
