Modern Silicone Baby Feeding Set β€” six pieces, and the smallest plate of the three

Our three-compartment suction plate, a matching suction bowl, a silicone sippy cup, a stainless steel and silicone fork and spoon, and an adjustable bib with a food-catching pocket. In Dusty Pink, Dusty Blue or Pale Grey. Suitable from 6 months. Two things set it apart: it is the set that does not look like baby kit, and its plate is the one genuinely sized for a six-month-old.

🍽️ The smallest plate of the three, and why that is a feature

All three sets hold the same six pieces. The plate is what changes, and it changes capacity as well as looks:

  • This set β€” 490ml across 250 / 120 / 120ml, 19.5 x 19.5cm and just 153g. Deliberately less than the others: a proper main portion and two small piles of something new, which is what a baby starting solids actually eats. It is also the lightest plate we make, so it is the one that goes in a changing bag.
  • The essential set β€” 600ml, 21 x 18.5cm, with a flat side that sits flush on a tray.
  • The dinosaur set β€” 650ml, 23.5 x 18cm, the biggest, and better suited from around a year.

So if you are buying for a baby just starting out rather than a toddler, this is the set whose plate fits the stage. Its honest limit is the same thing in reverse: 490ml is the smallest capacity we sell, and a hungry one-year-old will outgrow it. The plate is the same one we sell on its own, so its full specification is on the three-compartment plate page.

🏠 Buying for the room as well as the baby

Most baby feeding kit is loud. Primary colours, cartoon faces, branding across the rim. It works perfectly well, and it also means that for two or three years your kitchen is decorated by a toy company.

This set is the alternative: rounded shapes, no character, no printing, three muted tones that sit quietly on a wooden table. We should be straight about what that is and is not. A plain plate does not help a baby eat. It is an aesthetic choice, and wanting your house to look like your house is a perfectly reasonable thing to want β€” we would rather say that than dress it up as a developmental benefit. If mealtimes need actual help, our dinosaur set is the one that gets a reluctant child to sit down.

πŸ“… When each of the six pieces actually starts earning its keep

The pieces do not all come into use on the same day, and we would rather set that out than let you wonder why half the box is in a cupboard.

  • The bib β€” the first day of solids. The piece used most, hardest and longest. It is the same silicone waterproof bib we sell on its own: a meal bib with a pocket rather than a dribble bib.
  • The bowl β€” from six months. PurΓ©e, porridge, yoghurt and anything with a sauce. In the early weeks of weaning this does nearly all the work.
  • The plate β€” a few weeks later. Sections only matter once food arrives in separate pieces rather than as one smooth spoonful.
  • The cup β€” offered from six months, used properly nearer eight or nine. Early attempts are mostly practice, and most of it goes down the front. Hence the bib.
  • The spoon and fork β€” keep these back. See the next section, because this is the one thing on this page worth reading twice.

πŸ₯„ The cutlery is steel and silicone, and that means waiting

The fork and spoon in this set are the same stainless steel and silicone pair we sell separately, and we tell people the same thing there: they are excellent cutlery and they are not what you want at six months. Steel tines on teething gums is the wrong tool, and steel conducts heat, so a spoon left in hot food gets hot.

In practice most children are nearer a year before the fork earns its place. You can use the spoon from the start in your hand, carefully. For a baby doing their own scooping at six or seven months, our all-silicone fork and spoon is the right pair, and it costs little to add. Keep the steel set in a drawer until they are ready β€” it will still be there, and it will outlast everything else in the box.

πŸ₯€ The cup is the bite-to-open one, not the free-flow one

The cup in the set is our snack-lid sippy cup, supplied without the snack lid. It has a bite-to-open spout, which means a baby has to press it with their gums to get a drink.

That matters if this is a first cup. NHS guidance favours a free-flow cup for learning to drink, because a cup that needs biting or sucking works more like a bottle than a cup. Our free-flow silicone sippy cup is the three-hole, no-valve one and it is the better place to start. The cup in this set comes into its own a bit later, when a cup that does not pour itself out in a bag is the more useful thing to have.

πŸ”’ The suction, and what it will and won't do

The plate and bowl bases grip a smooth, flat, dry surface and take the shove, the bang and the sideways swipe. Wipe both the tray and the base first β€” a wet seal is a weak seal β€” and press down from the middle outwards. Neither will hold on a ridged or textured tray, or on bare wood with a grain, and no suction base will. Worth knowing on this set in particular: at 153g the plate is our lightest, so once the suction is broken it is the easiest to shift. On a high chair tray you will not notice; on an open dining table you might.

πŸ”¬ What we have actually had tested

Our silicone plates and bowls were tested as finished products to EN 14372:2004, the European standard written specifically for children's feeding utensils, across 15 samples covering 13 colours β€” migration of elements, phthalate content, volatile compounds, formaldehyde release and bisphenol A release, with nothing detected.

A bowl from the range was separately tested by Eurofins against LFGB Sections 30 and 31, the German food-contact standard and among the strictest anywhere. It passed overall migration, peroxide value and volatile organic matter testing, bisphenol A was not detected, and a sensory panel confirmed no perceptible odour or taste passing into food. Every plate and bowl we sell is the same food-grade platinum silicone from the same supplier.

We publish the reports on our silicone information page rather than asking you to take our word for it.

🧼 Care, piece by piece

The plate and the bowl are marked oven, microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe, which is unusual and genuinely useful β€” you can bake a small portion, cool it, freeze it, warm it and serve it in the same dish.

That marking applies to the plate and bowl only. The cup, the bib and the steel cutlery are dishwasher safe and should stay out of the oven. Wherever you see a feeding set described as simply "oven safe", it is worth checking which pieces that covers.

What we like about it

  • Muted tones and no printing, so it does not take over the kitchen
  • A 490ml plate sized for a baby starting solids rather than a toddler
  • The lightest plate we make at 153g, so it travels
  • Rounded sections with no corners for a spoon to miss
  • Plate and bowl both oven, microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe
  • Steel and silicone cutlery that will outlast the rest of the box
  • A bib with a pocket, which is the piece you will use every single day
  • Plates and bowls tested to EN 14372, with the reports published

❓ Frequently asked questions

Is it better than the other two sets, or just nicer looking?
Nicer looking, plus the plate that best fits a baby just starting solids. The contents are otherwise identical. If mealtimes need help, the dinosaur set is the one; if you want the plainest practical option with a bigger plate, the essential set holds 600ml and has a flat side that sits flush on a tray.

Will the 490ml plate be big enough?
For a baby starting out, comfortably β€” the 250ml main section takes a full first-foods portion. For a hungry one-year-old it is the smallest we sell, and the dinosaur set's 650ml plate will serve you longer.

Is the cutlery safe for a six-month-old?
The spoon is fine in your hand. We would not hand a six-month-old a steel fork, and we say the same on the cutlery's own page. Our all-silicone pair is the one for self-feeding at that age.

Is the cup free-flow?
No β€” it is bite-to-open. For a first cup, our free-flow silicone sippy cup is the better start and the type NHS guidance favours.

Will the pale colours stain?
Silicone can pick up light colour from tomato, turmeric and beetroot, and the paler tones show it sooner. A soak in warm water with a little bicarbonate of soda lifts it.

Does it make a good gift?
The best of the three for giving, in our experience β€” it covers a whole stage, and the muted colours mean you are not imposing a colour scheme on someone else's kitchen.

🍽️ Which of the three sets?

Same six pieces every time. The plate is what differs, in size as well as style:

  • Modern β€” this one. The 490ml plate, our smallest and lightest at 153g, in muted tones. The set for a baby just starting solids.
  • Essential β€” a 600ml plate, 21 x 18.5cm, with a flat side that sits flush on the tray. No theme.
  • Dinosaur β€” the full-size 650ml dinosaur plate, and our best-selling set. The one for a child who needs persuading to the table.

Everything in the set is also sold separately across our plates, bowls, sippy cups and bibs. Our guide to what is in a silicone feeding set, and whether you need one works through it honestly, and signs your baby is ready for weaning covers the timing.

Safety information

Adult supervision recommended at mealtimes. Check every piece before use and stop using any item if the silicone splits, tears or a suction base comes away. Keep the cup lid away from a baby when it is not on the cup. Steel conducts heat β€” do not leave the cutlery standing in hot food. Let oven-warmed food stand before serving.
