1. The material

2. How long it lasts

4. Certification you can actually check
Look for FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) on wooden toys — it means the timber is traceable to a responsibly managed forest, covering replanting, biodiversity and the rights of forest workers. The red flag list: "eco-conscious", "planet-friendly", "made with recycled elements" — vague phrases with no certifying body behind them. If a brand cannot tell you which part is recycled and by how much, it is a design choice, not an environmental one.
Why the material matters so much at this age
The problem with plastic
Most conventional baby toys are made from standard plastic — a material that contains a cocktail of chemical additives including BPA (bisphenol A), phthalates, PVC, and other substances that you really do not want near your baby's mouth. And your baby will put everything in their mouth. That is completely normal and developmentally healthy — but it means the material really matters.
Beyond safety, plastic baby toys are almost impossible to recycle. They break, they get thrown away, and they sit in landfill for hundreds of years.

Safety marking to check
Every toy sold legally in the UK must be UKCA or CE marked and meet BS EN 71, the toy safety standard covering mechanical hazards, flammability and chemical migration. Alongside that, always follow the age grading — the "0+", "6m+" or "18m+" marking is about choking hazards and developmental suitability, not about how clever your baby is.

Caring for eco toys so they last
- Wooden toys: wipe with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, dry immediately, never submerge. If the wood looks thirsty after a year, a rub of food-safe beeswax or coconut oil brings it straight back.
- Silicone toys: top rack of the dishwasher, or hot soapy water. If they pick up a cloudy film, a soak in white vinegar and water sorts it.

Far fewer than the internet suggests. Most child development guidance points towards a small, rotated selection of open-ended toys over a large permanent collection. Four to six well-chosen items per stage is plenty.
